Alcohol content

One of the most important parameters in viticulture is obtaining sufficient alcohol content. This parameter has an impact on the quality of the grapes and in turn the economic yield of the vineyard.

The alcohol content is linked to the sugar content of the grapes, which in turn is conditioned by the availability of certain nutrients. The most relevant nutrients are sulphur, potassium and zinc.

Sulphur is also related to pigmentation and polyphenol content that provide their organoleptic features.

In the manufacturing process of VERFOR, FORTEC and NUBIECOL, we naturally incorporate these nutrients, as well as the rest of the elements (macro and #microelements) that a vineyard needs.

Fertilisation cases

When growing vines, the following main fertilisation goals are sought:

  • Fast formation of vine training: In the cultivation of vines, reducing the formation time can be crucial to shorten the production start. Elements such as phosphorus, calcium and #microelements achieve quick growth and conduction system. 
  • Alcohol content: The supply of #microelements, complexed potash, magnesium and zinc allow you to obtain a higher alcohol content. 
  • Facilitating crop management: Too much vigour leads to an excess of shoots, which impairs veraison, pruning and harvesting. Organic nitrogen, #microelements and essential minerals are part of the solution, while reducing the formation of "grandchildren".

Essential nutrients

With regard to vineyards, there are five elements that are essential for high yields:

Zinc

Zinc deficiency reduces the crop’s yield potential. This produces shorter internodes, weak blossoms, poor bunches and lack of alcohol content.

Boron

An essential mineral to ensure bunch closure. It must be present before the end of winter dormancy in order to achieve large and homogeneous grape calibres.

Iron

Low levels can cause plant damage and significant crop reductions, flower loss, poor fruit set, reduced photosynthesis and leaf loss.

Sulphur

A chlorophyll component and important in sugar formation. Sulphur is involved in a large part of the secondary metabolism involved in the production of polyphenols that subsequently provide the wine with its organoleptic properties.

Potassium

The availability of assimilable potassium to the plant at all times improves production and alcohol content. One of the most efficient ways of supplying it is to combine it with organic matter.

Prevention of nutritional deficiencies

In most cases, nutritional deficiencies become visible when the damage is severe. Prior to this, the crop has already undergone stress, which has an impact on the yield. It is very important that the most scarce or least available nutrients are always available from the onset of the vegetative cycle.

In the case of vines, these minerals are as follows:

  • Boron
  • Iron
  • Zinc
  • Manganese
  • Magnesium
  • Strontium
